Janice Mary Benson (nee Shaughnessy) - (aka: Jan, Janny, Yanis, Kitty, Kitten, Sister, Patsy) passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family, her dear friend Maureen and in the arms of her daughter Tara on June 4, 2016 at the age of 69. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Gale Benson. Loving mother of Kelly (Tyler), Tara (Dan), and Ted. Proud grandma of Sophie, Parker, Jack, Thomas and Liam. Jan was born into the large, loving Shaughnessy/Sullivan family on March 14th 1947 to Rita Cecilia (Sullivan) and the late John Francis Shaughnessy. Sister to Dan (Barb), Tim (Hannah), Patrick (Mary Ellen), the late Matthew, Louise (Yves), Jay (Rosie), Andy (Kathy) and aunt to Tim, Sheila, Connie, Casey, TJ, Patti, Aaron, Norah, Brendan, Ciara, Aedan, Liam, Maude, Samuel, Meghan and Loretta. Jan will be remembered by her cherished nursing colleagues from St. Joseph’s Hospital (Peterborough) who affectionately called her ‘sister’. It was during her time nursing at St. Joe’s that she and her ‘partner in crime’ Maureen Bates hatched their plan to celebrate the Academy Awards which eventually grew into large annual event in Peterborough raising money for a local women’s shelter. She was an avid runner, downhill skier, baseball player, gardener, she loved to travel and could bake a pretty mean butter tart. Most who knew her will remember her love of music and her ability to belt out the tunes of her her idol, Patsy Cline. A visitation will be held at the NISBETT FUNERAL HOME 600 MONAGHAN RD. S., PETERBOROUGH (705) 745-3211 on Friday June 10th, 2016 from 7 - 9 p.m. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at the CATHEDRAL OF ST. PETER IN CHAINS (411 Reid St.) on Saturday June 11th, 2016 at 1 p.m. Interment to follow at Rosemount Memorial Gardens. In memory of Jan, donations to The YWCA Crossroads Shelter (Peterborough, Haliburton) for women and children would be appreciated by the family.
